China : Wake up call for Changde textile industry

　　The Changde city textile industry could become very strong and vibrant but for some weaknesses. Experts believe that the industry could become very competitive if steps were taken to improve things right from farming to the final sales of the product.

　　Farming is one area which needs a lot of improvement. The industry should adopt a modernized and scientific way of farming while planting seed and during the harvest season. Modern agricultural tools should be employed which will increase productivity as well as reduce the wastage.

　　Value addition should be adopted for all products by developing industries for the same. For e.g. fabric should be converted to garments. This will also increase the employment potential in the city. There is an urgent need to improve the product quality of different products in the textile city.

　　Improvement in quality will lead to better profits for the units. The industry should also implement modern professional inputs rather than sticking to traditional methods.

　　The units should start to think big. They should move from being small to becoming big as this will lead to lower costs. Along with the above modernization is also a very important factor.

　　Most of the enterprises are still having very old machines which ultimately produce low quality products at a high cost. By modernizing, the industry will be able to overcome both. The skills of the work force should be constantly upgraded by means of intensive training, which in turn will increase the productivity of the units.

　　The industry is very capital intensive. The industry should look to other potential sources to raise capital other than looking at traditional sources. One could be raising capital from the stock markets.

　　The industry should look beyond local & regional markets to sell their products and try to develop the markets of their products at a national or international level.

　　If the above were to be done by the Changde city textile units it would go a long way in being competitive.
