India:Dereservation for textile and rubber sector |

The recent Indian budget 2005-2006 had thrown open the rubber and the textiles sector, including hosiery, for large and medium-scale manufacturing. It had stated that 108 items for the small scale sector would be dereserved bringing down the list of 605 items to 497 with this change.
These include 21 textiles, including hosiery products, 20 rubber products, 27 electrical machinery and appliances, and 13 mechanical engineering products, leaving out transport equipment.
Relaibkle sources say that the list would be published in the government of India’s gazette during the week.
Besides the 16 textile products, including hosiery, four other items under art silk or man-made fibre hosiery have also been dereserved. The 20 rubber products dereserved include tyres and tubes for cycles and rickshaws, rubber hosepipes, and rubber blowing agents.
The 13 mechanical engineering items include hand pumps, hand showels and other agricultural implements have also been dereserved.
An official was quoted saying “Studies have shown that big companies have not quite forayed into sectors dereserved in the past. In fact, the small units have become far more competitive.” |
