Kenya:Country may forego Agoa benefits due to lack of
cotton and raw materials |

The dying cotton industry should be revived unless Kenya wants to get barred from exporting textile products to the US under the African Growth and Opportunity Act (Agoa) in three years for not producing textile from locally available raw materials.
This was stated by Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry chief executive officer Titus Ruhiu, who said that the AGOA Act stipulates that only textile products made from locally produced raw material would be allowed into the US market by 2008.
Ruhiu was addressing business people in Nakuru town during a meeting organised by the Nakuru Business Association (NBA).
At present, thread and cotton are being imported by some industrialists as Kenya does not have the capacity to produce enough raw material following the collapse of the cotton subsector.
It was attended also by the organisation''s national chairman, David Githere, Nakuru district commissioner James Mwaura and NBA chairman Peter Kinya.
Ruhiu blamed poor political leadership for most industries in the town to collapse over the past 20 years, and urged the business community to take advantage of the changed environment. |
