France:Karl Lagerfeld is all over Chanel''s spring/summer 2005

2005-1-28

German designer Karl Lagerfeld for French fashion house Chanel''s spring/summer 2005 haute couture collection in Paris yesterday.

Lagerfeld underscored the decadent and peculiarly French character of haute couture in Paris yesterday by showing his spring/summer 2005 collection for Chanel on a catwalk designed to look like a formal garden at Versailles palace.

With bignames missing from the show, and fashion on the downside, the theme presented was a confident gesture from fashion''s Sun King.

Skirt suits - the world''s most expensive and perfectly tailored varieties were paraded around a fountain spurting water from two giant interlocking C''s - the famous house logo - and black foam ornamental trees that bloomed white camellias.

The satge had flower and the monochrome palette set, which are both house symbols introduced by Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel - inventor of a seemingly endless number of brand signatures that Lagerfeld constantly re-interprets and updates for the modern market.

Chanel, recently paid Nicole Kidman several million-dollars to appear as the latest face for their perfume as part of their global promotion strategy.

Besides Lipsticks and quilted handbags, hand-stitched frocks and suits were all on display.

It was “curtains down” with glamorous and feminine evening wear, many cut in an elegant sack-back silhouette. Another Coco invention from the 1920s, the little black dress, also appeared, in a flared and fluid a-line of silk chiffon, or in tiers of black tulle and Chantilly lace.

Designer Karl Lagerfeld, who has headed the Chanel studio for 22 years, emerged at the end of the show with a gaggle of models on his arm, taking his bows to the strains of a harpsichord.

Those who actually invest in an haute couture suit from the brand were treated to their very own show, staged immediately after yesterday''s first press presentation, held inside a large hall at Ateliers Berthier attended by Kylie Minogue shielded by bodyguards.
