Italy:ANCI says bleak outlook for Italian shoe industry

Italian shoe manufacturers association Associazione Nazionale Calzaturifici Italiani (ANCI) has released disappointing third-quarter numbers for the Italian shoe industry and warned that the trend was unlikely to improve greatly in the fourth quarter of 2004 and first months of 2005. The shoe manufacturers association reckons that production of shoes made in Italy fell 5.1 percent in volume and 3.8 percent in value in the first nine months of 2004 following a decline of 10 percent for the years 2002 and 2003. According to Anci President Rossano Soldini, the decline was due to external factors rather than to the competition of Italian shoe manufacturers. Selling prices rose only slightly by 1.7 percent in Italy and by 1.1 percent abroad. "If seen in combination with the increase in raw material and petrol prices it is easy to imagine the falling margins Italian shoemakers have been facing," Soldini said. Imports have increased by 19.6 percent in the first eight months of the year helped by a 16 percent fall in prices. The Far East continues to dominate imports of footwear into Italy with a share of 32.5 percent in volume. Imports from China rose 37.6 percent in the period while imports from India increased by 51 percent from India and 30 percent from Indonesia. Exports declined by 4.8 percent in volume in the January through August period while rising 2 percent in value.
